Chan Poling plays piano and sings in The New Standards. Chan has been in the business of entertaining since 1977 when his rock band, “The Suburbs” got their first recording contract with Twin/Tone Records in Minneapolis, MN. He has since gone on to record music for Polygram Records, A&M Records, Universal Music, Restless/BMG and Manifesto Records.

In the year 2000, due to their great influence on the cultural world of Minnesota, The Minneapolis Star and Tribune voted The Suburbs among the “100 Most Influentiual Musical Entities of theTwentieth Century.” The Rake Magazine Readers recently voted Chan #6 in their “Favorite MN Rockers” poll, and the Minnesota Music Awards honored him with their POP (Perpetually Outstanding Performer) Award. Chan also includes an Emmy for one of his TV documentary scores among his other recognitions.

Mr. Poling’s music credits encompass the world of theater as well; including award-winning work (New York Theater Critics Award for “Best Play”, etc.) for the Tony Award-winning French/American troupe Theatre de la Jeune Lune and for Kevin McCollum (producer of Tony award-winning “Avenue Q” and “Rent”, etc.) who commissioned Chan to write music for a new work developed under the aegis of the Ordway Theater.

Chan also co-founded Pixel Farm Music, part of the very popular post-production house Pixel Farm Services where Mr. Poling writes and produces music scores for commercials and all sorts of exploitative outlets.

With The New Standards and other projects, Chan continues to perform, record and write songs, and score and develop stories for musical theater, feature films and TV. And yet, he still worries about being called “lazy”. His therapist might have something to say about that, if he had one.
